Didn't you say on your Jan. 1st post that it was necessary to upgrade to firmware 2.21 in order to use yellowsn0w? I just spent a lot of time getting the new firmware and my phone still won't work. I have an iphone 3g, now with firmware 2.2. I thought I unlocked it but it doesn't work with my T-Mobile SIM. Help!

Yellowsn0w released a version that works with 2.2.1, but the problem with the baseband 02.30.03 ... people like me who upgraded accidentally have nothing but to wait for a version of yellowsn0w that works with the 02.30.03 baseband, or you can do a temporary solution from ebay which is turbo SIM. its like $10

okay, so if you just want to just jailbreak your phone but leave it on AT&T, you can upgrade to 2.2.1 and it will work fine right?

One you accidentally upgraded to 2.2.1 with modem firmware 2.30.03, there is no way to downgrade the modem firmware back to 2.28.00 (2.2 5G77). I can say you downgrade the software back to 2.2 (5G77) but the modem firmware is still 2.30.03. So... just wait for another release from iphone-dev and yellowsnow for the patch to 2.2.1. And don't ask when it will become available because nobody knows. Just keep checking their website/blogs and next time... dont get excited upgrading iphone software from itunes.

Turbo SIm doesn't work for this problem. I have TWO sim solutions here & neither of them work in my 3G phone that has updated to 2.2.1 so now runs the 2.30.02 firware.

Just upgraded to the mistake of 2.2.1. I have tried all, including the Turbo SIM's.
Yellowsn0w 0.9.8 doesn't work, so I guess we just need to wait till Yellowsn0w 0.9.X is available. Hope it is soon!

Does this mean that if I buy a pay as you go iPhone from O2 in UK, I can't unlock it to use any sim card I want to, because it will either upgrade to firmware 2.2.1, or it come with an earlier firmware than 2.2. So it is now impossible to buy and unlock an iPhone? Or is it possible to upgrade the iPhone just to firmware 2.2?

---step by step instructions on how to get 2.2.0 firmware back---
It is really simple to downgrade from 2.2.1 back to 2.2.0 by simply going into QuickPwn and start the program once the 3rd screen pops up and you get the choice to browse for your firmware... -click on browse. -once the window pops up. -click on the 2.2.1 firmware and drag and drop into the Pwnage file that you created before using QuickPwn. -then select the 2.2.0 firmware and drag and drop into the folder that you first pulled the 2.2.1 firmware from. -Then AFTER you DOUBLE CHECK that the two firmwares have been successfully switched. -Click on the desktop icon on the Quickpwn browse window and select the 2.2.1 firmware from the pwnage folder. -go through the QuickPwn process. -Once the iphone has been jailbroken. -go into itunes and hold down ctrl and select and then click restore. -release the restore button before ctrl and select. -at sometime during the restore an error box will pop-up saying that you are unable to restore. -CLICK ON DONT SEND!!!!!!! -once you close the error message your phone will be in recovery mode. -immediately reopen QuickPwn. -before you are able to use QuickPwn you will need to hold the menu button and the power button for 15 seconds then release the menu button and hold the power button for 2 seconds. -open Quickpwn and once you come to the 3rd page. -when you click on browse make you should see the 2.2.0 as your itunes recovery firmware which will now work. -select 2.2.0 and run through the program one more time. -when its finished you iphone will have successfully downgraded from 2.2.1 to 2.2.0. -only downfall is you will still have 02.30.03 as your modem firmware but at least you will have 2.2.0 firmware ....
once i figure out how to get 02.28.00 M.F. back i'll leave more step by step instructions.

Just buy a turbo sim and temporarily use it. My phone came with a turbo sim. I accidentally used the wrong ipsw to restore the phone (was supposed to be a custom one I did on another iphone that preserved the baseband but upgraded the firmware) and now the baseband is 2.30.03. Yellowsn0w obviously got deactivated. So I stuck in my gevey 3g sim (even the old one from half a year ago works!) and quickpwned my iPhone and voila, it is back to working calls and everything. So seeing as how the dev-team (who totally rock) is working hard on cracking 2.30.03 but hasn't come out with it quite yet, get the proxy sim for cheap online and your phone should be fine. Quickpwn/pwnage tool automatically activates the iPhone with it so you don't have to go through iTunes and the annoying "SIM is not supported please insert blah blah" bullsh*t. I'll wait for the dev-team to come out with the crack, but for now thanks to gevey 3g my iPhone is working 100% just as well as it was with yellowsn0w. It's always good to have a proxy sim as a backup in case anything like this happens. I was an idiot not to check the ispw before I restored. STUPID STUPID ME. But yeah, instead of having an expensive ipod, or a large paper weight, get the gevey 3g proxy sim if you really want your phone up and working. When the dev-team cracks it then go download it by all means, but no worries as long as you have that proxy sim you know that if you accidentally upgrade again when 3.0 comes out...you'll be okay. I'm so relieved I had the gevey handy. PHEW!

To all the sarcastic assholes - you don't know other peoples situations and why they did the upgrade - it's not always stupidity you know?! First off, some people live abroad and were unable to get iphones, so had to buy in the states and pay their way in (and out) of ATT contracts (I am one of those) but the bloody phone is still locked to ATT despite paying all that money to get out of the contract. Also, some people don't use macs, and couldn't use pwnage to preserve baseband. The Dev Team instructions warned not to use quickpwn if you want to be able to unlock with yellowsn0w, nothing about it breaking hardware sim unlocks. Some software required firmware 2.2.1 which is the only reason I updated myself.
Dev Team are generous guys and I hope are more understanding and not as fucking smartass and arrogant as some of the people on this board. Here's my fingers crossed that they are working on a 2.30 baseband unlock... but I haven't seen any statements from them yet.

i have a iPhone 3G with 2.2 & Modem firmware 02.30.030 and my solution is use a REBEL SIM CARD for 2.2.1 for baseband 02.30.03 keep my Cable & Wireless sim card OK! But install yellowsn0w 0.96 with Cydia and reboot...and the signal will be OK! Thats all for now..!

there is a a way to downgrade your baseband pretty easily to 02.28.00
search baseband in cydia :)
only if you got bootloader 5.8. Otherwise use your phone as a brick. or wait for os 3. i personaly think, they dont battle around with 2.2.x anymore. rather work on os 3.0 plus new band base maybe. rather cool if that would work.

I live in Africa and I've had my eye on an iPhone for some time, but the "retail" price (the oficially unlocked version) is a little outside my price range.
I recently got my hands on one that someone was kind enough to bring over, but it's locked to ATT. It appears to be a quite late model because it's 2.2.1 / 2.30.03 right out of the box (didn't get a chance NOT to update it... Lol) and since it's so new, I expect bootloader > 5.8 also so I haven't even bothered trying to downgrade baseband to 2.28.
Anyway here's the question. It seems obvious that the dev teams haven't been able to crack the newest ones yet - still absolute silence from yellowsn0w on the subject - So how come there are so many people SELLING a (software, not rebelsim or whatever) solution to unlock even these newer ones? Are they all fake or has somebody really got a solution?
Scam!! The only SIM that's *RUMORED* to be working perfectly fine (without the signal dropping issue or any such crap) with the iPhone 3G 2.2.1 BB 2.30.03 is the GeveySIM.

Low signal areas it does drop. It trys and trys until it gets signal but if your in an area where T-Mo is week and then roaming company is to it will go back and forth and Turbo SIM will reboot ALOT.

I bought an iPhone 3G (2.2.1/2.30.03 - not jailbroken) from Asutralia and right now im livin in Pakistan. I was using my iPhone with a turbo sim installed. I downloaded and installed the new OS 3.0 from iTunes and right after that.. it got stuck. It now just says that I have to insert a sim to unlock it. I tried to restore the settings by using QucikPwn, using the image: [iPhone1,2_3.0****.restore.ipsw] but still no Luck! and it still says.. that insert a sim to unlock? what does that mean?? hav i just lost it?? is there anyway? whats ultrasn0w gonna do?
