As long as you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with a 02.28 baseband, the yellowsn0w unlock should work on it!
How do I know what baseband I have?
To check what baseband you have go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware on your iPhone 3G.
Can I downgrade from Baseband 02.30.03?
As of right now you cannot, you are permanently stuck with this baseband.

I'm in a different country and my Iphone cannot be activated. I was able to jailbreak it but dont have signal with my carrier to download the yellowsn0w. As a noon, I assume I can connect via wifi and download?

@Max you can use either PwnageTool for MAC or QuickPWN for Windows.
Note: If you use QuickPWN jailbreak and update to 2.1, don't upgrade to 2.2 with QuickPWN because your baseband will also be updated and the updated baseband won't work with yellowsn0w as of right now!
@iphonehacker: It's simple to unlock your iPhone 3G. All you'll need to do is launch Cydia and install a program as I stated in this FAQ. :)

Even if one has updated to the latest firmware (2.2 officially) this program will unlock the Iphone 3g. Sweeeet! That means it does not matter what firmware your iphone 3g is running, as all current firmware's are supported!! :):)

jailbroke my iphone 3g using pwnage tool and installed yellow sn0w and then installed third party sim. did not get any service and after about 2 minute it says "no service" i have the latest baseband and everything. any ideas?!?!

Great news about Yellowsn0w. Just a couple of questions:
Do I have to upgrade the Iphone thru Itunes before installing Yellowsn0w.
Is the Baseband something to do with the upgrade to 2.2 on the iphone?
I have installed yellowsn0w, but I am getting no signal from T-mobile, although my friends phone which is on T-mobile is getting a full signal.
It would seem that we all have the same problem. Is there a solution to this and does anyone know why it is not working. Has anyone actually got it to work yet

If you aren't getting service, or dropping calls do this.
Uninstall yellowsn0w and reboot your iPhone after going back to the Cydia main menu. When the phone boots back up, redownload yellowsn0w and go back to the Cydia main screen and from there, put your sim card back in and then reboot your iPhone. When your phone reboots, don't do anything besides let the screen go black. Once it goes black, wait 20 seconds and then slide to unlock. You should now have service. If you don't, which I didn't, take the sim out and put it back in and wait for a black screen and then wait another 20 seconds. Did that work? Hopefully! And by the way, if you can't find yellowsn0w, make sure you added the source for it. For cydia it is http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ and for installer is http://i.yellowsn0w.com/

mine didnt work, but i have now got it to work all i did was keep taking the sim card out and putting it back in again. when it says wait 20 seconds it more like 20min i just left mine for ages and it eventually worked.

ok so when is there an update for this. mine worked after like 20min then i turned it off and on and its not working now. i think there are a few to many things wrong with this.
its being 5 hours .. no of times i upgrade and jail break my iPhone.. doing every thing step by step by using Cydia and Installer but... No Service... for t-mobile USA sim card. I just spend my 5 hours for nothing..
I gotta tell you... After reading some of these posts I find a lot of people unappreciative of the efforts these guys put into making what should already be free, FREE FOR YOU.
Granted, I have my own problems with unlocking the 3G... the No Service and itunes saying I have a bad sim issues.

exactly you are right, i was screwing about my five hours. bc i upgrade my version now i lost my service, i was using it with turbo sim. I dont know why you speaking too much.. If you have solution than speak else keep your mouth shut. I know who did what and who are doing what, They will do their work you don't need to buttering them,, and by the way they do not need your butter.. so let me tell the dev-team its Beta Version it does have so many problem even after trying number of times I didn't get service. Think Positive.. and try not to speak too much,,,
Used Itunes to restore back to 2.2firm and 2.28.00 baseband
Gave Quickpwn the Restore file from apple(firmware 2.2)
Used Quickpwn to install Cydia and Installer
Downloaded and Installed OpenSSH
Download putty or any other ssh application.
SSH into the iphone. My scenario below.
--My Iphone was connected to my wireless router.
--So technically it could be ssh'd into using putty over the network.
the default password for the root account is 'alpine' without the two ''
From the laptop on my desk, I opened up putty(free) typed the address below:
root@192.168.1.5
I dialog will pop asking to save the key on your computer. Pick Yes or No and NOT Cancel.
It will ask for a password, apline is the default. To change it, type passwd.
You will be prompted to type a New Password and to Re-type it again to confirm.
now you have edit a file using vi, vim, or whatever editor is available. I used vi.
so cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
vi org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist
find this line by scrolling down. string -q string
change the -q to -a. Get close to the -q and press the key 'i' to evoke insert mode
Backspace to remove the 'q' and add the 'a'
Press esc key once to get out of insert mode. Press :wq and press enter
w to write(save) and q to quit(after saving)
you should be back to terminal. type 'reboot' to reboot the iphone.
The rest is the same instructions provided above.
On lockscreen wait for ~2mins, then remove the sim card(tmobile US for me).
Unlock the phone, Settings->Airplane mode ON, wait for ~4mins
Put the sim card(tmo US) back in, wait, wait, wait, 1min, then turn off airplane mode.
It will show the "searching...." on top left... ~15secs it should find the network.
If you reboot the phone, you have to repeat the airplane mode scenario
to gain the network again.

-I rebooted the iphone, repeated the airplane trick and I gained network again.

So I read at Boy Genius Report website yesterday that a group was release a kit
to unlock the iphone. Keep in mind, my iphone came with 2.2 and base 2.28, so
you can tell how freaked out I was when I read about the Dev warning to stay away
from firmware 2.2. I didn't know anything about iphones but I knew some kit was
due at 12am Jan 1st '09. So I went ahead and put the 2.1 back and sat at my friends
house drinking some cranberry juice while I waited for the new year. I went to sleep
at around 2am and work up at 10:30am today. From the time I woke up I have restored
the iphone atleast 15times and jailbroken it almost 10times and its now 8:20pm and
I just discovered the cure 1hr ago. So forgive me if I give myself some praise because
it has taken me almost 10hrs to get familiar with the iphone scene and to get tmobile
to work with the phone. Hope everything i explained works out for you.

I followed the steps exactly. I had a TurboSim unlock. But to follow these instructions I got the jailbreak thru QuickPwn and got Cydia on my phone.
Followed the instructions exactly for installing YellowSn0w using Cydia directly on the phone.
I got service for like 10 seconds after which once again I am back to No Service !

Note: It didn't worked out 1st install try. Then I went and removed yellow0snow and reeintall in the end. At the lock screen if not working take sim and insert again.

i use a t-mobile sim card and when i turned it off of fly mode it said invalid sim card make sure iphone is unlocked somthing like that

Guys, it seems that your iPhone must first work, and then have access to a 3G network so that you can get Cydia to download the yellowsn0w and install. But surely this is the catch. Without the unlock the SIM doesn't work, how can Cydia download anything to the phone. I saw a video of Musclenerd downloading from a PC. How can I do this?

I really need someone's help, although I installed both cydia and yellowsn0w, I'm still getting SIM Locked message with two buttons underneath it:OK and Unlock when I choose Unlock it prompts me to enter my PIN number, after approving waits for the activation and displays the SIM Locked message again. Any idea how to solve?

Remove the sim lock from your sim card. That's usually the problem. Yellowsn0w doesn't support sim lock (yet).

I think that 3G is not possible on other networks, but maybe if the other network supports 3G, you can call them and say that you want 3G activated for your phone.
SO, depends on the network, try calling customer service.
